Formulas
How each average is calculated
Take the numbers 3, 7, 7, 10 and 23:
- Mean: add them up and divide by how many there are: (3 + 7 + 7 + 10 + 23) ÷ 5 = 10.
- Median: sort them and take the middle one: 7. With an even count, average the two middle numbers.
- Mode: the most common value: 7. A list can have no mode, or several.
- Range: largest minus smallest: 23 − 3 = 20.
Notice how the single large value, 23, pulls the mean (10) above most of the numbers, while the median (7) stays in the middle. When the mean and median are far apart, the data is skewed, and the median is usually the better "typical" value.

What is the difference between mean, median and mode?
The mean is the sum divided by the count, what most people call "the average". The median is the middle value when the numbers are sorted. The mode is the value that appears most often. They answer slightly different questions about "typical".
When should I use the median instead of the mean?
When a few very large or small values would pull the mean away from what is typical. House prices and incomes are usually reported as medians for this reason: one mansion shouldn't make the whole street look rich.
What is standard deviation?
A measure of how spread out the numbers are around the mean. A small standard deviation means the values are close together; a large one means they vary a lot. Use the sample version when your numbers are a sample from a larger group, and the population version when they are the whole group.
How should I enter the numbers?
Separate them with commas, spaces, semicolons or new lines, and use a period for decimals (1.5, not 1,5). You can paste a column straight from a spreadsheet. Anything that isn't a number is ignored.
